Migraines and Stroke Risks
by Geri Walton ~ October 28th, 2008
Did you know there is a link between migraine frequency and your risk for stroke? A study published in the American Academy of Neurology in July 2008 indicates Caucasian women who have migraines and a variant in their methyleneterahydrofolate reductase gene are much more likely to suffer a stroke. In fact, their three times more likely.
Researchers claim that the gene variant affects approximately 11 percent of the population, but the risk for stroke only increases if the woman has migraines and if the migraines include visual disturbances, such as auras. For that reason, doctors claim if you suffer from migraines you should be particularly sensitive to managing problems related to cardiovascular diseases, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and high cholesterol.
