Cold Sores and Turmeric

by Geri Walton ~ January 12th, 2009

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), and they affect nearly 50 percent of adult Americans. If you’ve never had one, they’re painful. However, there may be something in your spice cabinet that may help. Van Andel Institute researchers discovered curcumin, a component of turmeric, blocks the virus, and, according to the researchers, “cells treated with curcumin did not support herpes simplex virus infections very well.” So, although, turmeric is not currently a cure, it does mean, there may be some spicy help on the way.

I think we are on the verge of rediscovering all those natural goodies from days of yore, which is fabulous (I for opne am fed up with modern chemicals). I read/heard somewhere that cinnamon is similar to turmeric in its healing/antibacterial properties.

I’m a STRONG believer in curcumin and it’s healing properties for cold sores. I’ve suffered from cold sores for as long as I can remember. I’ve tried just about every “remedy” and medication I could find. I had minor luck with a french product I got while overseas, it reduced the healing time, but I still had to battle out the painful sore. Recently, I correlated curcumin and cold sores. I buy liquid softgels of a patented bioavailable curcumin extract (BCM95 is the tradename) and poke a small hole in a softgel and apply to the sore — now I’ll admit, the contents are bright orange, but the next day, the sore is virtually GONE! I’ll deal with 30 minutes with orange on my face for the relief of my cold sores!! I SWEAR BY IT!!
