Make it Stop: Tinnitus Remedies

by Geri Walton ~ September 25th, 2008

Tinnitus is caused when microscopic endings of the hearing nerve are damaged in the inner ear. It can also be a symptom of another condition, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, allergies, neck injuries, or head injuries, such as TMJ. It is noted for its ringing, whooshing, humming, whistling, pulsing, or buzzing noises heard in the ear. In addition, it can be intermittent or constant, and its pitch can be barely audible or roaring.

The American Tinnitus Association (ATA) estimates there may be as many as 50 million people affected by tinnitus. Some people can be incapacitated by it, and other people seem to be barely bothered. However, if it interrupts your routines or is driving you nuts, here are several natural remedies you can try.

  • Acupressure. Pressing on certain acupressure points helps reduce noise levels for some people. Find the depressions directly in front of your ears at the jaw’s hinges, and press the spot for at least 30 seconds. Do this three times a day.
  • Almonds. Tinnitus sufferers usually have low levels of magnesium, and almonds are rich in magnesium. In fact, one ounce provides 20% of your daily value (DV). Other good sources of magnesium are halibut (3 ounces-20% DV), spinach (1/2 cup-20% DV), oatmeal (1 cup-15% DV), black-eyed peas (1/2 cup-10% DV), rice (1/2 cup-10%), lentils (1/2 cup-8% DV), and avocado (1/2 cup-8% DV).
  • Choline. Some people have benefit from this B vitamin. There is no known toxic levels from choline, but it can aggravate epileptic conditions.  No more than 500 mg. is recommended, and it is best taken with other B vitamins. Check with your doctor first.
  • Exercise. Because tinnitus seems to be linked to blood pressure and blood circulation, exercising helps both: It reduces blood pressure and improves blood circulation.
  • Gingko Biloba. Studies indicate tinnitus can be related to a communication breakdown between nerve cells. Gingko Biloba increases blood flow in the head and neck and can enhance nerve cell communication. Purchase Enzymatic Therapy - Ginkgo Biloba-24%, 40 mg capsules, and follow the directions on the bottle. Try it for two months, and if no improvement is seen, discontinue its use.
  • Relax. Many physicians suggest you relax and ignore it, and see if you symptoms disappear on their own. In fact, the more you worry about it and focus on it, the bigger problem it may become, so, instead, practice relaxation techniques.
  • Retrain. Retraining therapy may help because it lessens stress and helps you cope. Talk to an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat [ENT] physician) about the specifics of a retraining program.
  • Salt. The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery suggests reducing your salt intake because it affects blood circulation.
  • Stimulants. Stimulants may also play a part in tinnitus, and so the suggestion is to avoid coffee, tea, soft drinks, and tobacco.

I was reading some blogs from people who really weren’t sure if their tinnitus symptoms were real or not. For example many had what I refer to as health anxiety and upon reading any article about any health issue, for example: tinnitus, they would suddenly get all associated symptoms. How can this be. Is ther any way of testing whether a person has the noises in their head or not??

You can cure tinnitus by applying 3 simple all natural methods. Before even trying to cure tinnitus, we must first know what caused it in the first place before atttempting to cure it. You might be skeptical but doctors will never tell you about this natural cure because they need your money for costly visits and surgeries. Thanks for this informative article. Keep up the good work.

You should also focus in on your diet (lots of vegetable fruits & grains; avoid highly processed foods, cakes & sweets, fried foods and not too much of the heavy meats). And, you should detox on a regular basis maybe a couple of times a year.

I apologize in advance if this sounds commercial, but I do believe I have something to add here. I am an ENT specialist who has suffered (and still do) from very loud T. After MUCH research I felt that the nutritional supplement route was the only way I was willing to go in terms of long term therapy. No prescription drugs for me. There are a reasonable number of people who can be helped by these supplements but not all will have a good result. You must accept that up front. The major problem with many of the supplements on the market today is that they make promises they cannot keep and they are very overpriced. Quality supplements should not be that expensive. You shouldn’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to find out if it will work for you. I have brought a product to market and again, I apologize if this sounds commercial. I take it myself and wouldn’t give it up for anything. It has made my life enjoyable again. I have tried to keep the price reasonable because frankly this is simply a sideline for me. I realize how stressful T can be. Lots of information is available at the site: http://www.mytinnitusmiracle.org
