Studies conducted at Michigan State University by Dr. Muralee Nair shows tart cherries have natural healing compounds, and these compounds allow them to reduce inflammation and ease arthritis or gout pain. When tart cherry components were isolated, the Michigan researchers learned they contained the highest amounts of anthocyanins 1 and 2, and anthocyanins not only give cherries their bright red color but also operate similar to pain medications in that they block pain.
