Tart Cherries Ease Arthritis and Gout Pain

by Geri Walton ~ September 4th, 2008

ccording to the Cherry Nutrition Report, if you suffer from arthritis or gout tart cherries may help. Studies conducted at Michigan State University by Dr. Muralee Nair shows tart cherries have natural healing compounds, and these compounds allow them to reduce inflammation and ease arthritis or gout pain. When tart cherry components were isolated, the Michigan researchers learned they contained the highest amounts of anthocyanins 1 and 2, and anthocyanins not only give cherries their bright red color but also operate similar to pain medications in that they block pain.

The Michigan researchers found it takes no more than “twenty cherries to receive 25 mg of anthocyanins, which help to shut down the enzymes that cause tissue inflammation in the first place.” Anthrocyanins essential work like aspirin or traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also known as NSAIDS, such as naproxen or ibuprofen. In addition, besides reducing inflammation, tart cherries  mop up free radicals, and that’s how their able to help diseases such as arthritis or gout.

Fresh tart cherries can be found at your local grocery store. You can also buy them frozen, dried, or canned. If you can’t find natural tart cherry juice at your grocery store, you can buy it online from Cherry Pharm in 8 or 32 ounce bottles. If you try the tart cherry juice and you suffer from stomach acid, one reader (see below) suggested tart cherry joint formula in capsules. They have less sugar and more concentrated. You can purchase them from Fruit Advantage by clicking here.

I have been drinking tart cherry juice for over two years and it has helped my arthritis and my husband’s gout. My doctor recommended tart cherry capsules instead of cherry juice because the capsules have less sugar and are more concentrated than the juice. She recommended Fruit Advantage Joint Formula. I have been taking them for 3 months now and I feel great and my stomach doesn’t have the acidity feel anymore. Here is a link to Fruit Advantage if you are interested http://www.fruitadvantage.com
