People often resort to Botox to maintain their youthful appearance, but according to Marie-Véronique Nadeau, a chemist, licensed aesthetician, and author of The Yoga Facelift, “contracting facial muscles, via exercise … shortens them, so sagging is reduced and the face takes on a toned and more youthful appearance.”
Nadeau provides exercises specifically designed for the muscles of the face and neck. Exercises target the chin, jawline, cheeks, lips, mouth, eyes, forehead, neck, and scalp. One exercise Nadeau demonstrates in her book is an exercise to address the lines around the mouth, known as smoker’s lines, and here’s how it works:
- Anchor your forefingers on either side of your mouth corners, while at the same time stretching your top lip down and over your top teeth.
- You lips should remain smooth with no puckers.
- Hold for the count of five, then release.
- Repeat three more times, but hold for the count of ten.
The exercises are easy and can be accomplished while you’re watching TV, sitting at your computer, or talking on the phone. Nadeau claims that if you faithfully practice the exercises for 15 minutes a day, you’ll soon see results because her holistic method will rid you of frown lines, reduce your extra chin, and eradicate any chicken neck.
Yoga instructor, Annelise Hagen, also has a yoga facelift book titled The Yoga Face. Hagen maintains that her “Yotox” is a new and a completely natural alternative anti-aging regimen that women can do anytime, anywhere, and in just minutes. The exercises are based on a simple principle: The muscles of the face are no different than the muscles in the rest of the body. If you don’t exercise the muscles below the neck, they become weak and flabby, and the same thing will happen to your face as you age.
One exercise that Hagen recommends to neutralize tension and alleviate clenching and furrowing that leads to facial wrinkles between the brow is known as the Budda Face pose. To accomplish this pose perform the following:
- In a seated and comfortable position, close your eyes.
- Imagine an iridescent point between the brows and with your mind’s eye, watch it expand.
- As you do, concentrate on consciously smoothing your wrinkles between your brows.
- If you feel your mind drift off, bring your attention back to your brows, and mentally smooth the facial muscles as you do so.
- Start with one minute, work up to two, then to three minutes.
A third yoga facelift choice, but available on DVD, is called Happy Face Yoga. It was created by Gary Sikorski, and it’s great. I actually tried this guy’s techniques. In fact, my face still hurts, so it must be working, and I’m sure I already look younger. The exercises are chosen in such a way as to create the maximum amount of stress to the muscles, which also means great results. Here’s a taste of his techniques, via YouTube.
So, whatever you choose Nadeau, Hagen, or Sikorski, it seems you can take years off your face without surgery. Yoga for the face, can tighten, tone, and firm your face, and although it may not be as quick as visiting the plastic surgeon, you can do it practically pain-free and for alot less money. I know because I did a little checking and botox treatments based on national averages are approximately $417 per injection, collagen treatments are $490 per treatment, and surgery is anywhere from $2,788 for cheek implants to the full facial facelift priced at $6,600.
