The American Journal of Medicine reported in May 2008 that women who are moderate drinkers—a half a drink to one full drink a day—had an 20% greater reduction in hip fractures than women who abstained. Apparently, that’s just enough alcohol to boost estrogen levels and encourage bones to absorb more calcium, which is good news for those people with osteoporosis. However, don’t think more liquor equates with stronger bones. Women who drank more than two drinks a day showed a higher risk of hip fractures than moderate drinkers.
