New on the horizon is the possibility of a breast cancer vaccine. According to the BBC, a new vaccine “targets breast cancer caused by an excess of a protein called HER2.” As HER2 is the most common form of breast cancer, so this is indeed a break through.
Researchers found that when mice with HER2 tumors received the vaccine it produced HER2 receptors that prepped the mice’s immune systems to fight cancer. In fact, cancer tumors in the mice were completely eradicated and with no side effects.
Although the vaccine is still in the early stages and may take years to be available, the lead researcher said the results are powerful and indicate, “This may be an answer for women with … tumours who become resistant to the current therapies.”
