America’s surgeon general recommends that besides your everyday activities, you also exercise moderately for thirty minutes a day. I was curious if thirty minutes of exercise was enough to prevent weight gain, and the answer I discovered was a resounding NO! In fact, according to various studies, in order to prevent weight gain, a person needs to be walking 10,000 steps a day, and the way to accomplish it is to own a pedometer.
I learned most people walk less than 10,000 steps a day . In fact, on average most people walk between 900 and 3,000 steps a day. This means most people fall well short of the 10,000 steps required to prevent weigh gain. The only way a person can make up the difference is to walk more steps. Even then, how can you know for sure if you take the recommended 10,000 steps or not? Well, you can either count them or you can buy a pedometer.
Pedometers count the number of steps you take. They can also track your walking time, measure your walking distance, and provide the number of calories you have burned. Yet, the real reason pedometers are so fantastic is studies show pedometers actually encourage people to walk because once you’re cognizant of how many steps you are taking, you’re more likely to walk and to walk farther. So, a pedometer can actually help you achieve 10,000 steps a day.
Over my lifetime, I’ve owned four pedometers. The one I currently own is new. I got it a month or so ago. It is the Sportline 350 Goal Tracking Pedometer. It’s shown to the right, and I just love it. I put it on every morning, and, then, by the end of the day, I know how many steps I’ve taken.
