Pomegranate Juice

The pomegranate is one of mankind’s earliest cultivated fruits, and legends of its health abilities have been in vogue since ancient times. In fact, some ancient people believed the pomegranate offered mystical healing properties. Clinical studies today are showing that indeed 100 percent pomegranate juice, such as that made by POM Wonderful, offers health benefits. Health benefits include:

  • Antioxidant Potency.  The Chicago Tribune, reported that Dr. Michael Davidson of Preventative Cardiology and Atherosclerosis Research at Rush University Medical Center maintains pomegranate’s “concentration of polyphenols make [it] the most potent antioxidant in nature,” and antioxidants are important to control free radicals that cause cellular damage.
  • Cardiovascular Health. Numerous studies have been conducted in relation to pomegranate and cardiovascular health. Indications are that pomegranate juice “decreases…systolic blood pressure [and improves cardiovascular health].” In fact, a study published in 2006 reported that pomegranate juice “can exert beneficial effects on the evolution of clinical vascular complications, coronary heart disease, and atherogenesis in humans.”
  • Prostate Health. Several studies—Malik, Adams, and Pantuck—using pomegranate juice found that it may prevent or slow prostate cancer’s progression in humans. It functions similar to curcumin (found in turmeric) and green tea and contains phytonutrients. The studies noted suggest it inhibits human prostate cancer cell growth and encourages cancer cell death, known as apoptosis.

Pomegranate juice offers more than just a tasty beverage. If you want to reduce your soft drink intake or if want to try something new and different, pomegranate juice is a wonderful option. Besides being tasty, it also appears to benefit health: It offers antioxidant protection, may prevent cardiovascular problems, and seems to prevent prostate cancer. If you’re interested in trying pomegranate juice, POM Wonderful can be found in the cold juice section of most grocery stores, and if you’re interested in learning more about the pomegranate and its many health benefits read Pomegranates and Miracles.

I love pomegranate juice, but if you’re unhappy with the taste, POM Wonderful has pomegranate juice mixed with other fruits, such as mango, blueberries, etc. If you still find the juice too strong, you could either water it down or mix it with other juices in a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio.

  2. Plain seltzer with a big splash pomegranate juice is delicious! Due to a low salicylate diet it’s pretty much all I drink other than water.
