Some things give you the biggest bang for your buck, and if you pick out those big bangs in relation to your health, happiness, financial security, and the environment, you have a darn good chance of living a full and happy life. So, what things did I decide provide the biggest bang? Here’s the list.
There a thousand things you can do for your health, but these are the four basics:
- Eat Nutritiously. Don’t think MacDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken are fruits and vegetables and candy bars and chips offer a well rounded meal. You need to eat foods as designated on the USDA’s Food Pyramid Guide. If you’re already doing that, then you can improve your health further by eating organics. The reason why I say this is because organic foods are more nutritious than non-organic foods. They have higher vitamin and minerals levels, plus they are not grown with pesticides. - Stop Smoking. The two leading causes of death in the United States are heart disease and cancer. Smoking causes both. So, the number one thing you can do to preserve your health is quit smoking.
- Wash Your Hands. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 76 million Americans get a food-borne illness each year all because they don’t wash their hands after using the toilet. If this you, make a commitment now to always wash your hands after using the bathroom.
- Wear Your Seat Belt. According to Oklahoma State University, this is the leading cause of death in people under thirty-five years old. You don’t have to be statistic. Wear your seat belt and survive.
Everyone needs to find happiness in life because it strengthens your immune system, lengthens your life, and benefits the public at large. So, what makes people happy? Here’s the list.
- Children and Pets. I would like to say these two items make you happy as I have both and I feel happier for it; however, after studying this issue for a while, researchers claim there are no measurable differences in a person’s happiness in relation to whether or not you have pets and/or children. So, if you don’t have pets and/or children and you’re happy, I’m happy too!
- Have Friends. Over and over studies are showing people with social networks live longer and are happier. If you don’t have friends, get some. Join Toastmasters, go to church, or join a gym.
- Marriage and Money. If you think money doesn’t buy happiness, you haven’t read anything by the life-long researcher and psychologist of happiness, Ed Diener. He claims money does make you happier, at least to a point. When people move out of poverty their happiness levels show marked increases, but once you pass the basic standard of living, you’re no longer happier than the next person. However, a report on WebMD in 2007 found if you were married and in the highest income group, you were happier than most other Americans. Hmm, I guess alot money does results in steady sex, which makes all those involved happier.
- Positive Thinking. People who are optimistic are just naturally happier. In fact, according to Diener, positive thinkers view threats as opportunities and find challenges in risk.

- Don’t Try to Get Rich Quick. Many people believe the best way to invest is to try and get rich quick. If you don’t learn anything, learn this, invest in index funds. According to the web site Get Rich Slow, “Index funds are low-maintenance, low-cost mutual funds designed to follow the price fluctuations of a broader index, such as the Dow Jones Industrial or the S&P 500. They are boring investments. But they work.”
- Live Within Your Means. The greatest thing you can do to ensure your financial security is don’t buy something if you don’t have money to pay for it.

- Save Money. Most people wait until they have extra money to save. Yet, the reality is, there never is any extra money, and, so, most people don’t save. Be disciplined. Set goals. Save money.
Everybody wants clean air, safe soil, and pure water. So, here a list of the four top things you can do to achieve those goals.
- Fight Against Mercury and Fluoride. I know there are many other toxic things in the environment; however, you’ve going for the biggest bang, and if you’re not aware, these two items are among the greatest threats. There are also commonly found in cosmetics, medications, food products, water, and so forth. They’re a major causes of harm to the environment and to you. - Give Up Meat. My son and any meatatarians won’t agree with this one. Unfortunately, cows produce methane gases and methane is the second highest contributing factor to green house gases and global warming. If you give up meat, there will be less demand, fewer cows, and lower methane emissions. If you can’t give it up, at least try and cut back.
